This essay “Games” by “Steven Johnson” is about the
relationship between video games and reading. It noted that a study in the
middle of 2004 showed that reading for pleasure had declined steadily among all
major American demographic groups. “Andrew Soloman” analyzed that people who
read for pleasure go to more outings, volunteer, and are active. Where
nonreaders, also more than half the population, have settled in apathy. “Steven
Johnson” writes a scenario of what it would be like if video games had been
invented before books. How video games engaged the young in social
relationships with their peers, and books have kids hide themselves in quite
spaces away from interaction with other children. Also, that we should all
encourage our kids to have more comfort with reading and to read more. But in
today’s society even the people who read a lot are going to spend time with
other media that surrounds us. Playing video games might not be a complete
waste of time and reading might be the best thing for you. But too much of both
of those things can waste your time.
